Back to School

Posted on Friday August 31, 2018

Now that the summer holidays are coming to an end, local kids and teens will be heading back to school.  We will soon see school zones filled with buses, pedestrians, cyclists and crossing guards.

We encourage all motorists to use caution while travelling in school zones in the coming weeks.  Back to school time can be a new and exciting time for kids and they may not always be paying attention to traffic.

We remind everyone that;

  • Everyone is required to share the road and we all need to pay particular attention to stopped school buses during the school year,

  • The fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is $495 and 6 demerit points,

  • Children must be taught to travel to school using a safe route.  Make sure to discuss road safety and rules of the road with them,

  • Children often have a hard time understanding that traffic can come from several different directions at intersections. It is important to show children how to cross a road safely and how to properly obey signals from a crossing guard.

By working together we can ensure that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable school year.
